When you have a daily sortie defense, are you supposed to give the NPC your sidearm?

Had this pop up today. Normally i just give the NPC my Kuva nukor and they’ll blast away. Today another player asked (well told lol) me NOT to give them a weapon. Is there a reason? Does them having a weapon make the enemies more likely to aggro them or something? Or do they move less? I always thought their movement was random (or like arbitrations where they arbitrarily [ha] follow a player). Does them having no weapon make it better or worse? I tried to watch the NPC during the play but didn’t see an appreciable difference in outcome.
