How would you change Pets?

I am sure this has been posted before, but I am curious.

I know that getting the right kind of cat or Kubrow can feel like playing slots. How would you change it?

or the survivability of cats, like the smeeta, make farming into a weird game of protect the cat and not really farming. What would you do different?

Personally I think the deimos pets were a good step in the right direction. mainly the panzer with its Panzer Devolution mod. But at the same time it feels a little overkill on the survivability.
