Hunhow is the king of the sentients. He created Natah. Natah was made to be a spy the Sentients could insert into the Orokin rank-and-file, but betrayed the Sentients to foster the Tenno later on. Erra is Natah's brother, Hunhow's son, and a loyalist to the Sentient cause. The Infestation was a prototype weapon created by the Orokin (namely led by Ballas, hereby referred to as "Ball Ass") to combat them. The Warframes are a successor to the Infestation, and they worked well enough to push back the sentients. This conflict is known as The Old War. Afterward, most of the sentients were left trapped in the Tau solar system, which was toxic to their kind, and rendered the Sentients mostly infertile. Obviously, even after the Sentients were initially pushed back, the Infestation backfired on the Orokin, and wiped out the rest, save Ball Ass. After that, the slaves of the Orokin formed their own societies, namely the Corpus and Grineer. We can see how THAT turned out. Centuries of intersolar warfare, division, civilian casualties, debt-slavery, and all-around bad times for everyone.

Alright, flashback time. So, we know that the Warframes require pilots. Specifically, the Tenno. Well, the Tenno were all from the cruise ship Zariman Ten-Zero (hence, ten-O), which suffered from a void storm. All of the adults on board died, but the children survived and gained Void powers. These powers were then used to create the Transference system, which allows the Tenno to remote-control Warframes from their Transference pods. After the fall of the Orokin, however, Natah, in an act of kindness, hid the Tenno on the moon (Lua) to make sure the Sentients could never find and destroy their greatest threat.

Okay, back to the present. In comes Anal Vor, trying to claim you for himself, yadda yadda yadda.
The Lotus wakes you up to fight the looming threat to the solar system, because the two factions are ripping it apart. However, little did we know that the remaining Sentients had lain dormant for the past few centuries, and had now been awakened, too. That's where you find the Oculysts (blue floating sentient things you had to scan to get the Natah quest), spies to see how ripe the system is for invasion. A few quests later, in comes Ball Ass, stealing our Space Mom for the Sentient cause (which is now just FUCK THEM ALL, NO PLANE UNSCORCHED, BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD), and promising the Sentients everything they could ever desire in exchange for his power. So, yay. Space Hitler. And that's where we are. On the brink of a full-blown Sentient invasion, spearheaded by the man who helped push back the first one. And the system is NOT ready.
